ANCC Continuing Education Contact Hour Awards

Healthstream LogoAmerican Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) defines the standards for high performance in continuing nursing education and measures adherence to those standards. ANCC-accredited contact hours can be used for RN license renewal and for specialty certification, which may require a certain amount of ANCC continuing education credits.

Please download the process description and other application documents below for applying for ANCC continuing education credits for your educational activity.

Before applying for an ANCC activity, please make sure that it fulfills the items in ANCC Activity Checklist on the right column:

Kaiser Permanente is accredited as a provider of continuing nurse education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Commission on Accreditation (ANCC) as well as being a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

ANCC Activity Checklist

  • The Program Planning team must consist of at least two people, a Registered Nurse with a minimum of baccalaureate degree in nursing and at least one Subject Matter Expert (SME).
  • Applications are due 8 weeks before activity begins.
  • The activity must be offered to more than one region.
  • The activity should promote nurses' professional development or performance.
  • The activity should be generalizable beyond the employer.
  • The activity should go beyond basic knowledge for the nurse participant.
  • The activity should be Evidence-based or based on best-available evidence.
  • The activity should be at least one hour in duration.

Speaking Up Training and Discussion Toolkit

This toolkit includes 10 short lessons that can be used to train staff and physicians on the topic of speaking up for patient and worker safety. Lessons last between 20 - 60 minutes and are designed to be used during team meetings, huddles, and one-on-one conversations. Minimal teaching experience or preparation is needed to deliver the training because the toolkit provides training messages, step-by-step instructions, examples, scenarios, and PowerPoint slides. And the training is conveniently accessible from any Internet-enabled device, including mobile phones, both inside or outside the KP network.

  • Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT)
    The purpose of this video is to show RNs how to assess for behaviors frequently associated with patients in pain using the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool, known as the “CPOT”. The CPOT was developed to assess pain in critically ill patients who cannot verbally or nonverbally report their pain. Download the CPOT handout to supplement the video above.
