Research Self-Study Educational Series
Purpose
Nurses are developing the scientific body of knowledge relating to nursing practice. While not all nurses are interested in conducting a research project of their own, all nurses are expected to read, understand and critically appraise research reports as part of professional practice. In addition, nurses are expected to utilize the results of scientific studies to improve patient care. The purpose of this educational series is to assist nurses to be consumers of nursing research, to evaluate the adequacy of research findings in terms of its scientific merit, and to consider its potential for utilization in evidence-based nursing practice.
Objective
By the completion of the series, the participant will be able to:
- Describe how research is different from other types of projects such as program evaluation and quality initiatives.
- Describe each step in the research process.
- Identify resources for further developing research skills at each step in the process.
